Chapter 1: Fire

“Well that was an hour of my life I’m never getting back.” Tyree said.  Holding hands with Ryan as they left the conference room.

“You’re a jerk.” Ryan glanced over and then lowered his head. “I’m always supportive of your hobbies and interests. When it comes to one seminar, all you did was complain.”

“Ry, I’m sorry. I thought I was going to learn more about your Shaolin Kung Fu.  You know, I thought it was going to be live demonstrations. Not a history lesson on how an ancient civilization used it as means to bend fire. Oh, and lived during the time of dinosaurs and other fantastical animals. I mean if humans could do that, why can’t we now.”

“Jerk.” Ryan said a little above a whisper.  He let go off Tyree’s hand and folded his arms as they stood outside of Campus Center. “The point is that while we may not agree that there are secret societies, we may and may not know for sure.  All I want to do is understand Shaolin more.”

“But, Ryan, the Dai Li? Earthbending, Firebending. If it were even possible, how come you can’t do it?”

“I never said I thought I could.  Plus if you were paying attention, it’s not your race. Your astrological sign determines your bending.”

“Your an Aries, isn’t that a fire sign?”

“It is”

“And you practice Shaolin, which came from firebending?”

“Can you feel the heat between us?”

Ryan couldn’t help but crack a slight smile. “You better be glad I can’t bend fire, because you deserve to get burned.”

Tyree grabbed Ryan by the waist. Standing over him by a few inches. Their eyes locked onto each other. Ryan laid his head onto Tyree’s shoulder as they embraced their hug.  Ryan felt secured and loved.

Tyree tilted Ryan’s chin up towards his lips as gentle as he could with his right hand. Their lips touched and their body heat was on fire.

“I hate it when you do that.” Ryan said.

“I’m sorry, I’ll be more considerate.” Tyree said and Ryan could see by the longing in Tyree’s eyes that he meant it.

“I may be acting  a little,” he paused, “over-emotional.” Ryan said as they continued to walk towards their car.

“Listen lover, even if you could bend fire, I will always love you.”

“I love you too.” Ryan said. “Why are you sweating so much?”

“You mean, other than kissing you?”

“It’s not that hot, nor am I that hot.” Ryan crossed his arms again. Tyree noticed that was his go to signature when he annoyed Ryan.

“I don’t know.” Tyree opened the car door for Ryan.  “Let’s get home and let’s make it hot.”

“You’re impossible.” Ryan said as he entered the car.  Tyree went to the driver’s side door. While Ryan wasn’t looking, he checked his tongue. Kissing Ryan felt like he ate a hot sandwich without cooling it. His taste buds were gone. Outside the corner of his eye, he noticed a woman staring at them. In fact she was watching them from the time they left the seminar.  They met each other’s eyes and then she left.
