Writing Journal #1: 8/26/19

I didn’t get much done today. I did manage to write chapter 2 of Genesis (Angel Protocols 1). This is still a rough draft, but I wrote the new chapter one, two, and soon three from the first chapter 1, which I wrote years ago.

I’m using Misery by Stephen King as my mentor text. For those of us who follow the Save the Cat methodology this means my story is a “Dude with a Problem.” I have my general outline, but tomorrow I will be focusing on each character, the 15 beats, and the 40 scenes before I start writing chapter 4.

I already like the revisions. I’m using limited third person point of view. This allows me to narrate from each character’s point of view. In addition I’m using the five man band trope and the Meyer Brigss typing. I was using 45 master characters and will use that as a general reference, but I have a book on MBTI to help me with personalities.

PLOT:

In the original first chapter I had the group celebrating a birthday, finding a victim of an attack, and getting into a fight with the attackers. After that I was lost. I knew who I wanted my villian to be. I also knew I wanted the story to be similar to The Bourne Identity (which is more of a superhero STC genre to me.).

Thanks to Save the Cat, I remember my initial concept of the first story was the team escaping from a facility. This was way befoe I thought about using the Bourne Identity.  With the orignanl plot in mind I decided that Misery was a better mentor text for me.

As a Dude with a Problem genre I will focus on three elements.

-The Innocent hero: In this case it’s the group of friends who are part of a bible study group named True Vicotry. They are general college students who are on diffeernt walks of christian life. They have no idea why they were attack.

-Sudden Event: They are attacked by men in hoods after witnessing them beat down a woman. No one else seems to notice the assailants.

-Life or Death Battle: The story is about how they escape a facility before they are killed as part of research.

I broke up chapter one into three chapters, but each chapter begins from the point of view of one character as they wake up in restraints inside of a facility. I felt this setup brings more drama and suspense as we uncover what happen when they were kidnapped. Eventually this will lead to the catalyst of the main story.

CHARACTERS: inspired, but not based on individuals I know, MBTI, and the Five man band trope.

Role: Name. Type. Weapon.

-The Leader: Jasmine. Extraverted Sensing Thinking Judging. A pair of sais. She is the planner and motivator of the group. Workaholic. Stubborn/prideful. Gap, Long hair, pear shaped body.  Passionate about duty. Formerly an angel known as the frog goddess of fertility Heqet.

-The Lancer: Darryl. Extraverted Intuitive Thinking Judging. A katana. He is the skeptical member and aloof member of the group. Determine. Quick tempered/wrathful. Afro, muscular build, pianist. Passionate about protecting close ones. Formerly an angel known as the god of the moon Khonshu.

-The Big Guy: Glynn Taylor. Extraverted Sensing Feeling Perceiving. An Axe. He is the most athletic and observant member of the group. Competitive. Envious/deprecating. Bald, eyes, slim build. Passionate about helping others. Formerly an angel know as the god of the dead Anubis.

-The Smart Guy: Kadeem Wade. Introverted Intuitive Thinking Judging. A Spear. He is the most studios and calmest of the group. Cunning. Shy/Gluttony. Portly build, mustache, crew cut. Passionate about changing lives. Formerly an angel known as Thoth who was worship as an Egyptian god of knowledge.

-The Chick: Cree Brooks. Introverted Sensing Feeling Perceiving. A Bow. She is the most emotional and pragmatic member of the group. Reserved. manipulative/Dependent. Chin length hair, mole on cheek, hourglass body. Passionate about being free. Formerly an angel known as Sekhmet who was worshiped in Egypt as the goddess of healing.

Favor of Ares Update

Yes, I know I didn’t publish the second draft yet, but wanted to let you all know that I just finished the 16th chapter of the remake (third draft lol).

I started doing logo designs for two clients so it’s been taking away from writing as well as developing Genesis (Angel Protocols 1) and Blood by Blood (The Family Pack 1).

Lust 3: Days 7-9

Okay so technically today is supposed to be day 9 of this journal, but it’s really Day 4. I wrote all of chapter 3 today and it’s hot of the heels of chapter 2. Now I know this chapter is going to be seen as the catalyst of the book for those of you who know about story structure. However this particular chapter/scene is inspired by the Ghostbusters setup which helps connects the main characters together in this world of spirits (Chapter 1) and humans (Chapters 2 and 3).

Also this is showing you what the present problems are for Manan and his friends. They now know a friend is dead, but they can see him. So now what? Before anything can happen they have to realize  they need a change, but before we get to that we need to do some more setting up because this isn’t their status death moment. Wait for chapter 4. (cue evil laugh).

Here’s the link to chapter 3

Lust 3: Days 4-6

Well I  had some serious writer’s block, but after going back and working on Manan’s background and the plot Chapter 2 is finally done three days later.  Manan who is basically the leader of this group of friends was pretty hard to write, but I think everyone will find the new revision better than his previous characterizations.  I also introduced another crime related to lust in “male rapes.” Since this is a rewrite I didn’t go into much detail, but I think it’s still works. Right now it’s about hitting my minimum word count (600 words/day, a chapter every three days.).

I will be writing chapter three tonight so stay tuned.

Here’s the link for the revised third draft of chapter 2.

Lust #3: Day 4 Goals

Happy Fourth of July,

Today on this Independence Day I have several goals for Lust.

Writing

-Daily Goal is always 600. Today starts the Chapter 2 which is narrated by Manan Shukla. The goal is to introduce him and his close friend Jason and integrate them with the A-story which is the mystery.

Graphic Design

-Work on redesigning the book cover.

Illustration/Cartooning

-Add to the Favor of Ares lore by designing Ares and making poster and t-shirt.

Lust 3 Day 3

Well I tried to start chapter two today since chapter one was finished a day early. I’m having trouble trying to introduce the 7 other main characters within the next three chapters. I had a unifying theme, but I don’t think it works with the new direction Im taking with the plot.

I did however, get a head start of developing the point of view character. His name is Manan Shukla.  He is going to be the leader of the Scarlet Knights under Ares’ mentorship.  I would say he is similar to Luke Skywalker, but with mix of Spock. He is from India, but grew up in America. I won’t reveal his psychic ability yet, but he is going to school for Pharmacy.

These posts will be renamed “Lust 3” which stands for the current draft.

I will also be working on Ares character design tomorrow too.

That’s all for now. I have to go look at my outline and their motivations to see how to write the next three chapters which is all part of my setup if you go by Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat.

Until next time stay terrific!

Chapter One Done

Chapter one of Lust is finished a day early. Yeah! Some of the changes I made wee story specific. I changed the crime from being a family to couples. The dialogue flows a little better.  The best part is that the minimum word count was suppose to be 1,800. I finished with a word count of 2,105.

I will be adding the chapter onto Wattpad under Lust (3rd Draft). Which you can find here.

Starting the Third Draft of Lust Today

Hey everyone so today starts the first official (for the third time no less) the third draft of Lust in my Favor of Ares series. The goal is to write at least 600 words a day for the next 140 days. Each 600 words will be the minimum for the beginning, middle, and end parts of a chapter. This means every chapter will be at least 1,800 words. I’m planning on having 40 chapters so I’m looking at a novel of 72,000 words. This word count qualifies each novel for industry standards.

Essentially that means it will take me three days to write a chapter. During those three days I will be working on that particular character’s bio, character design, and arc especially for act one of the book.

Obviously if I feel I can write more than the minimum then I will. The minimum is set so that Lust will be finished by November 18th.  My maximum goal is to write 1,800 words a  chapter a day which would be 40 days.  However, I have to account time for other projects like my screenplay, art, design, clients, and life. This minimum goal is great because I can also start focusing on the other novel series. I’m planning on starting graduate school for creative writing so managing time is going to be crucial.

So stay tune for part one of Chapter one of Lust (Favor of Ares 1).

Lust and Binary are nominated for a Watty Award !

Both of my novels Lust (Favor of Ares 1) and Binary (Clockwork Knights 1) are eligible for the Watty Awards. Both of them will be competing in the mystery/thriller category.

“The Watty Awards are Wattpad’s annual celebration of the electrifying, visionary, diverse voices that choose to share their stories on Wattpad every year”

Both of my novels had word counts of 10,000 or more and were published on Wattpad the previous year.

I don’t expect to win only because its the second draft of Lust and the rough draft of Binary that were eligible, but it’s still exciting because I finished two novels. I wanted to take the time to thank all my readers and supporters !!!

Wish me luck!
